There is something about the smell of butter melting into fresh bread or toast that is wholly satisfying and that can make anyone feel right at home anywhere in the world. As I write this on day something of COVID-19 lockdown in Edmonton, my home for the past two decades, what I long for most is the simplicity of buttered toast.
