Sauerkraut – a Still Life Once, when I was in a teenager, my grandmother had a crock full of sauerkraut fermenting in the dining room of her house. There on a chair in the corner, hand-shredded green cabbage was weighed down by a smooth, heavy rock on top of a white china plate. Where my grandmother got the rock, I don't know. I didn't ask at the time, just accepted this prop as a necessary component of the sauerkraut tableau.
